Lightleakz

(2011 - 2022)

I started taking photos with my first film camera back in 2011. I did not have any specific photography training which led me to accidentally exposing the film roll many times. However, after developing the film and seeing as a result that I could create unexpected explosions of light, this really piqued my interest. I started to intentionally expose the film rolls to light, by opening up the back of film cameras whilst out shooting and waiting in anticipation for the printed results. I love how a light leak can completely transform a photo, whether it obstructs the original subject or adds an interesting layer to the final image.

Between 2018 to 2022 I curated an instagram account with film photos taken and submitted by the public, using the hashtag #lightleakz to be featured. I researched relevant hashtags and scheduled the photos into an aesthetically pleasing order. It fascinated me how photos taken by different people could often fit so well together as if it had been planned collectively. Before the Instagram algorithm changed, the curated selections were averaging over 1k likes per post.
